Toscanini: NBC Broadcast November 22nd 1947 – Music of the 18th Century

Bach: Suite No. 3 in D Major for Orchestra, BWV 1068
Vivaldi: Violin Concerto in B Flat RV367 (Violin: Mischa Mischakoff)
Handel: Concerto Grosso in B Minor, Op.6, No.1
Bach-Respighi: Passacaglia in C Minor, BWV 582

Mortimer Frank in his book Arturo Toscanini: The NBC Years mentions that it was rare for a conductor to lead an all-baroque program at that time, and that most of the works “are performed with a small orchestra having a transparent texture, relatively little vibrato in the strings and a harpsichord to provide continuo support.”

Back in 1947 there was not the ‘original instrument’ thought when it came to baroque works, but these Toscanini performances are not overly symphonic or overdone.

Other than the ‘Air’ from Suite No. 3, none of these works were part of the official recordings released by RCA.
