Bargain Box: Slatkin’s Tchaikovsky Ballets

Bargain Box: Slatkin’s Tchaikovsky Ballets

Leonard Slatkin conducts Tchaikovsky Ballets Leonard Slatkin recorded the three Tchaikovsky ballet music scores in the 1980’s-1990’s for RCA. The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake get a lush, great sounding recording from Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. These are treated like true symphonic works, not just ballet pieces, and are my favorite incarnations of complete music recordings. I think these recordings have been forgotten since their first release, and it is nice to get all of them…

There have been a lot of big box sets released over the past year or two, like the DG 111 sets, complete symphony recordings by Bernstein and others. I am going to do a rundown of some of the bargains and must-have releases. The 11 CD Chopin Collection by Rubinstein is a must-have. These are all of the recordings that surfaced with the 1980’s Chopin Collection from RCA plus more. I had many of these LPs, but unfortunately the vinyl…

Handel Strauss and Tchaikovsky deals

Handel Strauss and Tchaikovsky deals

Sometimes I run across some really great deals on classical music when I am browsing the online stores that are just too good to pass up. Handels Water Music and selections from the opera Alcina are one a 2 track set for $1.98. Of course the music is not broken up into tracks, but the sound and performance are good, and this is a steal. On the Seraphim label, Felix Slatkin and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra run through some great…

Strauss: Also Sprach Bargain

Strauss: Also Sprach Bargain

I have had this recording since it came out in 1983. At the time, it was one of my first CD purchases, and how things have changed. The performance clocks in around 34 minutes, and for a full price CD it was a bit of an extravagance on the record company’s part at full price. And to top it off it was not even tracked or indexed, just one big track. Nonetheless, Ozawa and the Boston Symphony give a great…

Bargain Bach Harpsichord Music

Bargain Bach Harpsichord Music

Looking for a collection of Bach? Here is a set of the Brandenburgs along with the Harpichord Concertos 1-6 plus the Harpsichord Concertos for Two and more keyboards. The performances seem to be from the old Vox catalog possibly, or may be newer, but either way decent recordings. The price has varied on this but currently under $10. That is quite a bargain, and not a bad way to expand your Bach collection too. Here is a massive harpsichord collection…
